Fall and Winter Quiet

After a busy summer, we have closed activities for the season. Fall and winter will see us working in the forest, grooming trails and tending to the trees. The new seedlings from 2023 have survived well and are happily growing. We plan to mow some paths between the rows to make it easier to visit them.

When the snow does come, the tracks of the animals will become visible which is always fun to see. Our trail cams already show us plenty of life – deer, rabbits, porcupines, red squirrels, chipmunks and of course around the house the mice come out at night as do the sounds of the coyotes. We haven’t seen the groundhog under the deck this summer though.

Spring and summer plans will get posted as we develop them and set dates. If there is anything you might be interested in joining or even hosting, get in touch. And think about renting the house for your get-back-into-nature days. The house is in great shape and always improving. We can now sleep 12 people, with 3 double rooms and the loft.

Spring 2024 House Renovations

We’re thrilled to announce that our extension renovations are done, for now.  Peter’s father Rudy built the original extension in the 1970s, but it remained unfinished. It took us 2 months of hands-on labour to renovate, resulting in 2 new bedrooms and another large living-room space. Here’s a sampling of “before, during and after” photos to tell the tale.

From moving the extension storage to the barn (thanks Miko and Heeji) to cleaning, wall construction, plastering, painting and furnishing, it was a lot of work, but the outcome is magnificent.

Naturally Lennox & Addington, aka our local tourism office, was onsite last week to take photos and promote us. It was such a pleasure to walk Rob & Miranda around the property, share stories, see them enjoy nature and admire our handy work. And while we don’t have a FB page (yet), here are the links for you to click on, admire and share:

The farmhouse can now host bigger groups – it’s honestly the perfect place for family reunions and rustic retreats. Updated photos are now on our AirBnb link: https://airbnb.com/h/scff and we are looking forward to summer rentals in between our programmed events. If you know anyone looking for a retreat in nature away from the crowds, please pass the link on.

SCFF June 2024 Newsletter

With longer days allowing for more time in nature, we’re enjoying the shades of green, turtles and wildlife sightings. We had a fun and informative Bird Count on May 19th, witnessing around 30 species in less than 4 hrs – which by professional accounts is a good record. Please put next year’s Big Day aka bird count in your calendar for May 10/11th 2025  – it’s easy to remember because it’s the same weekend as Mother’s Day.

The 1970s

Through the late 1960s and into the ’70s, the farm saw a renaissance as Peter’s parents built a homestead on the bones of the original farm.

Spring 2024 Newsletter

Shibagau Creek Forest Farmstead

Spring is in the air at Shibagau Creek, and we’re grateful for the migrating birds, budding trees and warmer temperatures. There’s so much to look forward to including the lilac trees that will be in full bloom in less than a month. Since our last newsletter we’d like to extend a huge thanks to Scott and his niece, Edie, who built and put up 5 birdhouses in the fields. We have 3 more emptied and cleaned to put up this weekend which the house wrens used last year, mostly for wooing their mates and decoying the bigger birds. We were happy to give them options to sing loud and proud – which they did.

This weekend marks our first official “work weekend” emptying the extension. It’s our plan to renovate this space, open it up to the south-facing view, and provide additional sleeping space. It’s going to look gorgeous.

Now, we are looking for volunteers, hosts, and participants for events. Enclosed is our updated 2024 schedule. We’re planning to expand what we offer, and we invite you to ponder what you may love to join us for, be it something we’re creating, or something you’ve had a hankering for leading. Honestly, the sky’s the limit, creativity has no bounds and SCFF provides a beautiful and inspiring backdrop.
